Consensus to Lead Peace Building Program at Lebanese American University

May 10, 2010 (New York) … Consensus, an American consulting firm that specializes in conflict resolution and peace building, has been engaged to lead Lebanese American University’s annual Summer School on Conflict Prevention and Transformation, which will be organized by the university’s Institute for Peace and Justice Education. The program is co-financed by the United Nations Development Programme and the Mennonite Central Committee.

LAU anticipates that, as in year’s past, the program will be attended by approximately 30 participants, most of whom will be graduate students from universities throughout the Middle East and who will be chosen to represent the religious, ethnic, and geographic diversity of the region.

“We want the summer school to be like the microcosm of [Middle Eastern] society,” says Dr. Irma-Kaarina Goshn, IPJE director and architect of the Summer School. “I see an urgent need for young people, who are the next generation of leaders, to understand conflict and how to manage it constructively. It can lead to positive change.”

The program is scheduled to take place in August 2010 on LAU’s Byblos campus. This will be the sixth consecutive year that Consensus has been retained to oversee the curriculum and activities.

“These youth have a very clear sense of what’s wrong,” says Consensus partner Zachary Metz, the project lead. “They are aware of the challenges that face their generation, and are passionate about addressing them.”
