Consensus Helps Prepare a Next Generation of Peace Builders April 23, 2010 (New York) … Consensus, a conflict resolution and peace building firm based in New York, lead an intensive program on peace building skills for graduate students studying Public Policy and Peace Building at Columbia University. The program was offered under the auspices of the Conflict Resolution Workshop Group at the university’s School of International and Public Affairs. The engagement began with Consensus interviewing participants to determine their experience, the challenges they had faced in the past, and the situations they wanted to prepare for in the future. The firm went on to design a series of three customized trainings on the topics of Cross-cultural Negotiation, Skills for Managing Conflict, and Effective Leadership: Communicating in Challenging Situations. The curriculum incorporated role-playing case-studies of actual participant experiences in other cultures and contexts, as well as dynamic and interactive presentations on foundational concepts and tools. “The program should help these future practitioners excel in the field,” said Ariel Lublin, the project lead from Consensus. “They practiced skills, analyzed several situations from their own experience, and received personalized coaching to develop their capacity to perform more effectively.” The student-participants report that they foresee using the tools while working on international project teams, and that they now have the skills to transform communication barriers into "bridges to shared understanding and problem-solving."
